02 — The problem

Release Management for Jira

Where releases actually break

None of this is a Jira problem. It is what happens in a complex enterprise environment with many dependencies, when nothing is watching the release itself.

  • The release lives in a spreadsheet. It is accurate on Monday and nobody trusts it by Wednesday.
  • Dependencies surface the day before go-live. The link was in Jira the whole time — nothing was watching it across projects.
  • Sign-offs happen in chat or email. When an auditor asks who approved what, and when, somebody goes digging through Teams, Slack, or email threads.
  • Release notes are assembled by hand. Usually the night before, usually by the person who can least afford the evening.
  • Everyone outside Jira asks the same question. “When is it shipping?” — one direct message at a time.
  • Every project reports done. The release still is not. There is no single place where the release itself has a status, an owner and a date.

03 — Why this app exists

Release Management for Jira

Jira tracks the work. It does not run the release.

Jira versions are scoped to one project. Advanced Roadmaps forecasts delivery across teams. Neither of them gates a release, records who signed it off, or writes the notes when it ships. That gap is the whole reason we built this.

Compared against Atlassian’s own capabilities as of September 2026. Advanced Roadmaps (Plans) is a Jira Premium feature. Release Management extends and augments both rather than replacing either — it works on the same Jira issues and versions.

04 — What it does

Release Management for Jira

One release view across every team and project

Native Jira issues, fields and permissions — surfaced as a release everyone can read.

01

Cross-project releases

Group work from many Jira projects into a single release with one status, one timeline, one owner — including release trains that span several teams.

02

Cross-project components

Create a component once and keep it in sync across every Jira project on the board — lead, default assignee, labels and scope in one place.

03

AI with Rovo

Summarise a release’s scope, status, and build a risk profile in one click, or ask the Release Management agent in Rovo to autonomously manage releases. Twenty built-in Rovo skills can create, move and update releases for you.

04

Dependency tracking

See what blocks what across projects and flag at-risk dependencies before they slip the release.

05

Approval gates

Add release workflow, controlled gates and sign-offs to the change management process you already run — CAB, security, QA — and record who approved what, and when.

06

Automated release notes

A release notes generator that builds from the Jira issues in the release, with templates for each audience, ready to publish to Confluence or share externally.

07

Release calendar and roadmap

Share a read-only Jira release calendar with stakeholders who do not live in Jira — no extra seats required.

08

Environments and rollout tracking

Deployment tracking that keeps rollout procedures and environment status next to the work, not in a spreadsheet.

09

Release automation

Rules with triggers, conditions and actions take the routine steps: notify Slack or email, open the CAB ticket, update work items when the release moves — and hand off to Jira Automation.

05 — How it works

Release Management for Jira

From scope to release notes, in six steps

A quick walkthrough of a cross-project release, from scope to release notes — inside Jira.

1

Build a release from many projects

Pull work items from every project involved into one release with a single status, owner and timeline.

Release board in Jira with the project avatars on each release card highlighted, and a legend for Project A, B and C

2

See dependencies before you ship

Cross-release links surface what blocks the release and flag what is at risk — before go-live, not after.

Release roadmap timeline with the dependency links between versions highlighted

3

Gate it with the right approvals

Add CAB, security or QA gates. The release cannot proceed until each sign-off is recorded against it.

Versions workflow settings with the CAB Approval column, the release notes trigger and the transition restrictions highlighted

4

Let automation take the routine

A status change triggers the next steps on its own: a notification, the change ticket for CAB, updated work items, a webhook to your CI/CD pipeline.

Automation rule that creates a change request when a version moves, its action list labelled by outcome (trigger a deployment, update the release, notify the team in Slack or MS Teams, create work items, create the change request for CAB), next to its run history

5

Ship with release notes

Release notes are generated from the work items in the release in one click, ready for Confluence or as HTML.

Release notes template with variables, and the release notes generated from it with milestones and export options

6

Ask Rovo for a release summary

Rovo sums up scope, status and blockers for anyone who asks.

★ 4.5 / 5

“We build a lot of apps, so trying to juggle all the roadmaps, support tickets, and dependencies between shared components used to be a massive headache. Using this for our release management just brought everything together.”

★ 4.5 / 5

“The roadmap and calendar views provide clear visibility into upcoming releases, while customizable workflows help maintain consistency across teams. The ability to manage cross-project releases and track dependencies is especially valuable for larger projects.”

★ 5.0 / 5

“The standout feature is the ability to manage cross-project releases seamlessly. For a large organization with complex products, Jira’s native capabilities and Advanced Roadmaps (Plans) often fall short of providing a unified view.”

08 — Cloud & Data Center

Release Management for Jira

The same release model on self-managed Jira

Not every release can live in the cloud. Release Management ships as a separate Data Center app, with the release model your teams already work in.

  • Runs inside your own Jira. Release data, approvals and audit trails stay on infrastructure you operate. Nothing leaves your environment.
  • Air-gapped deployments supported. No outbound calls required for the release model to work.
  • Your identity and permission stack. Release actions map onto the Jira roles, groups and SSO you already administer.
  • Evidence stays where auditors expect it. Every gate, approval and scope change is recorded on the release, inside the instance under review.

09 — Setup & security

Release Management for Jira

Installed from the Marketplace, running on the Jira data you already have

Nothing to provision and no Jira data to move. What takes time is your process — most teams have it running in two to three weeks.

  • A Jira admin installs it from the Atlassian Marketplace. There is no server to stand up and no separate account for your team to create.
  • No data migration. It reads the Jira projects, issues and fields you already have — releases are built on top of them, not imported into somewhere else.
  • Live in two to three weeks. Setup means shaping release boards, workflows and gates around how you release today — usually moving a spreadsheet process you already run into Jira, not designing one from scratch. The more mature the process, the faster it goes.
  • Your permissions, extended — not replaced. People see the issues they already have access to. On top of your Jira roles, groups and SSO, the app adds board-level manage and read-only access and lets non-admins manage versions and components without project-admin rights.
  • Security documentation is public. The Cloud app is built on Atlassian Forge, Cloud Fortified by Atlassian and covered by SOC 2 Type II, with the full posture in our Trust Center — one link to forward to your reviewer.
  • Support answers within 24 hours on business days. Questions go straight to our own service desk and the team that builds the app.

10 — FAQ

Release Management for Jira

Release management for Jira — common questions

What is Release Management for Jira?

It is an AI-native app for Jira that lets you plan, gate and ship releases spanning many projects and teams — with dependency tracking, approval gates, release automation, automated release notes and Rovo AI to summarise a release or act on it, without leaving Jira. It installs from the Atlassian Marketplace, its Cloud app is built on Atlassian Forge, and it runs on the Jira projects you already have.

How is it different from Jira versions and Advanced Roadmaps?

Jira versions are scoped to a single project. Advanced Roadmaps (Plans) forecasts delivery across teams. Neither gates a release, records who signed it off, or generates the release notes when it ships. Release Management groups work from many projects into one release with a shared status, timeline, dependencies and approval gates — and it extends both rather than replacing either, working on the same Jira issues.

How many licences do we need, and what does it cost?

On Jira Cloud there are two editions. Standard is free for sites with up to 10 users; above that, it is licensed for the same user tier as your Jira site — that is how the Atlassian Marketplace licenses every app, not a rule specific to us. Advanced adds enterprise controls — milestones and custom properties shared across boards, release frequency reporting, your own naming and release IDs — and is paid from the first user. The Data Center app is a separate listing with its own licence. Every paid plan has a 30-day free trial, and you can start it without a credit card.

Who installs it, and does it change our Jira?

A Jira admin installs it from the Atlassian Marketplace — there is no server to provision and no data to migrate. It reads the projects, issues and fields you already have and respects your existing Jira permissions, roles, groups and SSO, so people see exactly what they could see before. It also extends the Jira permission model: who may create release boards, who manages or only views each board, and who may manage versions and components without being a project admin.

Does it work on Jira Cloud and Data Center?

Yes. It runs on Jira Cloud and is also available as a separate Jira Data Center app for self-managed, air-gapped or data-residency needs. Both carry the same release model and are separate Marketplace listings with separate licences. The Rovo AI features are available on Cloud.

Can it manage releases across multiple projects and teams?

Yes — that is its core purpose. You group issues from any number of projects into a single release and track scope, dependencies and approvals in one place, including release trains that span several teams. Components can be shared the same way: create one once and it stays in sync across every project on the board.

Is it secure? Is it Cloud Fortified?

Release Management for Jira is a Cloud Fortified app built on Atlassian Forge and is covered by SOC 2 Type II. Security, compliance and sub-processor documentation lives in our Trust Center, which is the single link to send to a security reviewer.

Does it work with Rovo and Atlassian AI?

Yes, on Jira Cloud. A Summarize with AI button on each release gives an instant summary of its scope, status, deployments and work item health. The Release Management agent in Rovo Chat answers questions about releases in plain language, and twenty built-in Rovo skills let Rovo create, move and update versions and packages, deploy them to environments and mark milestones. A site admin has to turn Rovo on first.

What happens to our data if we uninstall the app?

Everything the app creates in Jira itself — fix versions, components — stays in your Jira. The app’s own data, such as release boards, workflows and milestones, is kept for 28 days after uninstall. Reinstalling does not reconnect it automatically: open a support ticket and we restore it.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — a 30-day free trial on the Atlassian Marketplace, no credit card required. On Jira Cloud, sites with up to 10 users can keep using the Standard edition for free after that.
